Kylie Jenner likes breaking the rules, just look at this MET Gala bathroom selfie!

#picoftheday #duckface: These are just some of the hashtags that have become popular across the internet. All three are often, if not most of the time, associated with selfies. There are at least 900k IG posts that have #wokeuplikethis while #selfie can be seen in the captions of more than 3.6 million posts in Instagram alone and the numbers pile up every single day. Because of our tendency to pick up our phone and take a picture of ourselves every time we see a place with good lighting, society has begun labeling us as The Selfie Generation.

"#selfie: more than 3.6 million posts in Instagram alone."

The term “selfie” was announced as Word of the Year in November 2003 by the Oxford Dictionaries, defined as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.” Although everyone affiliates this to younger generations, the first ever selfie was actually taken back in 1839 when a photography enthusiast named Robert Cornelius removed the lens cap of his camera, ran and stayed in frame, and covered the lens again. He wrote “The first light Picture ever taken. 1839.” at the back of the photo.

Best Selfie Ever: Academy AwardsNamed as one of the best selfie ever, the most star-studded one!

Because selfies are uploaded in social networking sites where people can shape their identities based on how we want to share ourselves to the online community, there are people who think that this may have some repercussions. The common argument is that taking too many selfies might unknowingly be influencing us to become a superficial generation that values outside appearances and online popularity more than anything else. Another common opinion is that selfie culture may stain one’s self-esteem if there is an ever-present platform to compare themselves with others who they feel are better-looking than them. This feeling of being physically inferior could later on lead to sadder issues.

However, a selfie can be a powerful thing and an effective tool in self-exploration. With the continued rise of empowered women, we are becoming more and more aware of what makes us beautiful beyond the frame and the selfies we take have served as reminders of every phase we’ve gone through before finally achieving whatever goal we’ve set our sights on. The selfie culture has taught us to embrace our imperfections and flaunt our flaws. Now, a lot of women are more comfortable and confident in their own skins because we have learned to highlight our strengths and accept and work on our shortcomings.

The key is to find an angle and #ootd that highlight your best features. For instance, since a selfie usually frames the face down to the neckline, opt for a top that shows off your collar bones or shoulder blades. Choose a fabric that invites attention like our Galaxy Sparkly Romper. It’s a metallic sparkly playsuit; an easy piece that you can wear on a night out of town or while lounging poolside. Keyhole detail at the back, wrap style neckline as well as metallic print details reminisce the glamour of the 70s.
